“And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.’” (Mark 16:15)

As a person who is kind of a film buff, I have collected a good many of movies over the years. In particular, I have been and will continue to be a collector of “Jesus” movies. I remember enjoying the film, “King of Kings”, growing up as a child. I remember watching “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Jesus of Nazareth”, and other such films centered on the life, death and resurrection of the Christ. I now, as an adult, own these films and do watch the periodically. I like how each “Jesus” film brings a slightly different take on who the Christ was and how his message played out to the people. In fact, different films focus on different aspects of Jesus ministry.

There is a new film that has been released on screens throughout theaters country-wide today. It is called “Son of God” and it is about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. It is taken from the The Bible miniseries that aired on the History Channel during Lent last year. This film contains the footage, and then some, that was found in that miniseries, and it was produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.

In an interview, Burnett and Downey were questioned about how they went about making the film. “Clearly, there people all over the board when it comes to reading and interpreting the Bible,” the interviewer began. “Different denominations have different interpretations as to the person of Jesus, who he was and what his life, death and resurrection means for the world. Did you consider that in the making of this film? How did you go about making a film that would satisfy different people with different interpretations?”

According to Burnett and Downey, they met with religious leaders from different denominations, including but not limited to Roman Catholics, Baptists, Evangelicals, Assembly of God, and other denominations in order to get their opinion on the Script and the direction the film was taking in terms of its presentation of who the Christ was. Burnett even said they brought the film to the Anti-Defamation League to seek their advice and approval to make sure that the film didn’t unintentionally cross into the realm being anti-semitic.

What a novel idea. While Burnett and Downey certainly have their own understanding of who Jesus is, they were not afraid to have their understanding challenged in order to create a film that reached people where they are at. That is not to say that the film will satisfy every person’s burning belief of who Jesus was, but it does show a level of openness to accountability that we rarely see in Hollywood, let alone in the church.

While, having seen The Bible miniseries, I do not share all of the theological positions of the filmmakers regarding Jesus, I do know that I will be going to see this film today. I think it is important to support such films because they get the message of Hope, Healing and Wholeness out to the masses. They catch the attention of people who need to hear that God loves them so much and that God would never leave them alone. They stir a curiosity about the real CHRIST in a world that has all but forgotten the power and importance of his message. So today’s challenge to you is to go and support the film, “The Son of God.” Even if you do not agree with everything, or even if you agree with everything, this film is one that is worthy of our time and money. No doubt, if you open yourself up to the possibility, God will speak to you as you journey with Christ through this film. Let your Lenten journey begin here.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY
Christ who was in the world is also within you, and through you Christ remains in the world still! Live into Christ and his Good News.

PRAYER
Lord, use me in a way that reflects Christ’s presence within me. Amen.

REVISITED: The Happiest Place on Earth

Read Galatians 3:1-5

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

Around this time in February of 2013, I returned from my family vacation in Walt Disney World down in sunny Orlando, Florida. Let me tell you, there is nothing like a Florida vacation when you are in the middle of a record-cold and snowy winter. The skies were blue and clear, the humidity was non-existent, the temperature was 75-80 degrees, and the people were as friendly as can be. Quite frankly, with temperatures like that, it’s hard not to be friendly.

Speaking of friendly, have you ever been to Walt Disney World? The people working there are always the nicest, most friendly people you’ll ever meet. They all have big, bright smiles on their faces. They all look genuinely happy to be at work. They all treat the park goers (aka the customers) as if they can do no wrong. Walt Disney World is certainly the HAPPIEST place on earth. If any of the “cast” members are having a bad day at work, no one would ever be able to tell.

While reflecting theologically on Walt Disney World, one can’t help but notice that the place is almost too happy. It’s almost too clean. I mean, one never finds a shred of paper, bubble gum, straw or trace of any kind of litter around the park at all. That is because they employ a whole host of “happy” helpers to sweep it up. When one enters Walt Disney World, it is as if they are leaving the real world and entering the greatest utopia ever (that is unless you hate to wait on lines…then you might not find it a utopia at all).

I have heard people muse that it would be awesome if the church took a clue from Walt Disney World. In other words, some people think that the church would be a whole lot more successful in its outreach and its growth if it would just put a smile on its face and show the world that the church is a happy, happy place. If churches would just be happy and distance themselves from fighting, bickering, power playing, and judging then it would only make sense that more people would want to go to church, right?

Yet, is that the answer for the church? To put on an act of happiness? Should the church turn itself into a clean, wholesome, happy-go-lucky, unlittered, perfect-in-every-way stage. Should church members become cast members who only show their good sides and are given no place to show any other side but their good sides? Would this church even be called “real”, should such a church exist?

The fact of the matter is that Jesus never called for a clean church; rather, Jesus calls us, the church, to get our hands dirty. We are called to be present in the lives of others. We are called to express ourselves honestly, we are called to present others with the opportunity to express themselves honestly. We are not called to be perfect, but are being called toward perfection.

The truth is that it would not be healthy for the church to model itself after Walt Disney World, as that is not true to what the church really is. The church is a mess that God continues to work in and through. It is because we are a mess that we are kept humble and that we are continually reminded of our need for God to guide us through! While it certainly wouldn’t hurt for our church to be cheerful and joyful, and it certainly wouldn’t hurt for church members to be as hospitable as the Disney Cast Members are taught to be, we are not called to be an escape from the real world, but the hope of God brought into the midst of a real and messy world. It’s time to get our hands dirty!

PRAYER
Lord, rather than seeking to be perfect, I seek to be perfected by you. Show me where I err, and change me to what you will. Amen.

REVISITED: It’s Go Time

Read 1 Timothy 4:7-11

ALSO IN SCRIPTURE

“Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.” (1 Corinthians 9:25-27)

This past week I started a new exercise program that one of my parishioners let me called T25. It was developed by Shaun T of “insanity” fame, and each workout is only 25 minutes long. Just twenty-five minutes, five days a week, for ten weeks. Each day is a different workout and the order of those workouts alternate week to week. By the end of it all, Shaun T claims that you will shed weight and gain muscle, stamina and endurance. All in ten weeks time. Sounds easy, right? I mean, all you have to do is workout for twenty-five minutes, five days a week? That’s it? For real?

Well, if you are thinking, “Gee, that sounds too good to be true,” then you are both wrong and right. You see, you are wrong because it is true that the work out only lasts for 25 minutes, and that one is supposed to do those workouts five days a week and that the program lasts for ten weeks. It is true that if you follow Shaun T’s plan you will end up shedding weight and gaining muscle, stamina, and endurance. I have seen what his “Insanity” program has done to my friend, and I trust that Shaun’s newest program T25 delivers just well.

But you are right in thinking that this sounds to good, to easy, to be true. While these exercises last only twenty-five minutes, they are an intense and grueling twenty-five minutes of high impact, focused interval training (F.I.T.) that get you the same results as an hour long workout. The sweat starts pouring out within the first ten minutes and the workout is over in twenty-five, but those are the longest twenty-five minutes for someone who is not conditioned to it. In fact, I had to do the modified workout because I am not quite used to all of that hopping and jumping around, and it still owned me!

Shaun T. is famous for saying, “You don’t get results by resting, you get results by working hard.” And that is very true. If we truly want something, we have to be willing to put the effort into what it is we want. If we can easily understand this regarding a work out, if it makes sense in our careers, if it makes sense in the things we want to accomplish, why does it seem to be lacking in our spiritual lives? Why is it that we will give it our all in certain things; however, we slack off on stuff as important as our spirituality and our relationships with God and with our fellow human beings. And then we wonder why we feel out of sorts, lost and a profound emptiness in our lives.

Today’s challenge is for you to step up your game, as it were, when it comes to your spiritual well being. It’s time to become spiritually fit, as well as physically and emotionally fit. Join a faith community, read and actively study the Holy Scriptures, pray regularly, partake in the sacramental life of your faith community, observe as sacred day of rest, and invest yourself in works of charity or, as I like to put it, in works of hope, healing and wholeness. If you do this, if you begin to make these a part of your daily/weekly routine, you will find that the results are amazing! It’s go time!

PRAYER

Lord, build me up into a whole person who is spiritually fit. Give me a desire to work for a stronger and deeper relationship with you, one that seeks to do your work of hope, healing and wholeness in the world around me. Amen.

Ultimate Reality

Read Ephesians 6:10-18

ALSO IN SCRIPTURE
“We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NLT).

Have you ever heard of the novel Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter by author Seth Grahame Smith? If not, you may have at least remembered the film of the same name based off of the same novel. It is a story that takes well-known facts about Abraham Lincoln, facts such as the loss of his mother due to ilness at an early age, growing up in poverty, learning to read and write himself, becoming a lawyer, then a politician, then president, etc., and weaved them into an alternate reality where vampires exist and Abraham Lincoln, despite what we think we know about him, is actually a vampire hunter.

In this reality, it was vampires who caused his mom to die, it was vampires who were funding the South and feeding off of its slaves. In fact, it was that very fact that was causing freed slaves to be brought back down South, to feed the vampires on the blood of those not even the Northerners would truly care about. In this alternate reality, Lincoln vows to kill the one who killed his mom and he takes up with a rather unlikely mentor to learn how to wield his axe against more than just trees and firewood.

The whole history of Abraham Lincoln is thus seen through this lense of a world infiltrated by vampires, evil spirits that look to divide and conquer an entire nation. Of course, for a time Lincoln hangs up his axes, so-to-speak, to run for and lead the U.S of A. as President as a way of defeating the South (and thus the Vampires) through legislation; however, that quickly leads to a Civil War that the country is doomed to lose unless Lincoln embraces his Hunter past and starts to fight the enemy on its own terms.

That’s more than enough context to begin to make a point that struck me as I was thinking of this story. In fact, I rewatched the film recently to make sure I was not off point in my memory. Still, this story would seem on the surface to be a retelling of history as we know it. It would appear to present, in fact, an alternate history, one that is more based in terrifying fantasy than reality. I mean, we all know Abraham Lincoln’s history. We know the history of racism in our country, and we need not conjure up vampires to pin evil down on the segments of humanity that perpetuate it.

With that said, in some ways, I argue that our version of history is actually dead wrong, pardon the pun, and this “alternate” history is actually more real than we realize. Now, of course, I am not suggesting that Abraham Lincoln was actually a VAMPIRE HUNTER nor that vampires in the physically undead sense are actually real, however, I am suggesting that evil forces have always been at work behind the scenes. That was no different in Lincoln’s day and it is certainly no different now. Lincoln on many levels understood this and the burden that he carried as a result was very visible. He was a broken man leading a broken nation toward some semblance of unity and righteousness. An impossible task on so many levels and yet, it was the task he undertook.

Our history as we present it only paints a very limited portrait. We in the modern world are so quick to dismiss things of the spiritual realm. Even we in the church try to dismiss things that might get us Christians preceived as “out there” or “fanatics” or “crazy”. Think about it, there is nothing we can do to stop people from thinking those things anyway.

Let’s be honest, we worship a God who shed divinity, took on a male human identity, got crucified and died. That same God rose again from the dead, ascended into heaven (a place we can’t see, touch, taste, hear, or smell…let alone sense), and sits at the right hand side of, wait for it, the Father-personality of himself…and that guy, that Jesus, will come back and judge all creation (alive and dead alike). If that doesn’t sound crazy, nothing will to the average person. But to us who KNOW IT TO BE TRUE, it is ULTIMATE REALITY. What’s more, we also know that there are evil forces, demons if you will, that exist in the Spiritual realm…that we are at war with dark forces and, truthfully, we are either the hunters or the possessed when it comes to those forces.

By hunter, I don’t mean one wields an axe or any weapon other than one’s faith in Jesus Christ. We do so through reading Scripture, through prayer, through fasting, through Holy Communion, through worship and attending to all of the ordinances of God. When we participate in the life of the Holy Spirit, we are filled with a life that wages war against the spirits and principalities in this world. That war has been going since the beginning of humanity’s fall and Christ will finally return and put sin, death, and evil to an ultimate end.

So, while we know that stories such as vampire stories are fictitious on one level, they do point to a truth on a deeper and more spiritual level. Out in the world, out the hostile and cruel world, there are forces at work beyond our imagining and, truth be told, vampires do exist everywhere. Anyone or anything that lives off of you by sucking the lifeforce out of you spiritually, emotionally, or psychologically is a vampire. We don’t respond to those dark influences judgmentally, but by prayerfully and Spiritually handing them over to Christ.

Jesus Christ, as in the fictitious stories, is the antidote evil in whatever forms it presents itself and we, his heavenly ambassadors, have the power and the obligation to resist such evil at all costs. Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, understood this. The Apostles, the earliest church Fathers and Mothers, the aesthetics and mystics, as well as saints such as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Rev. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. all understood this and paid with their lives in one form or another. Friends, let us also understand this wisdom and allow Christ to prepare us for the spiritual war that is raging.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY
We wage battle not with swords or spears, guns or tanks; rather with the Word of God, Jesus Christ, through our presence with and loving service to those the world shuns, the outcast, the needy and the least of these.

PRAYER
Lord, help me lead others to where they otherwise might not see. Help me to be a sign of your love, presence and grace to all I come in contact with. Amen.
